Kaizer Chiefs winning formula behind successful start according to Doctor Khumalo.

Chiefs legend Khumalo shines a light on three crucial elements from Nasreddine Nabi’s debut match as the club’s head coach. Amakhosi kicked off the new season with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Marumo Gallants in a Betway Premiership clash held in Bloemfontein last Saturday.

In a match that showcased resilience, the Soweto giants rallied after falling behind early. Academy graduates Mduduzi Shabalala and Mfundo Vilakazi delivered the goals that secured the win. “For now, we can’t say much about one game,” Khumalo noted, emphasising that one match is just the beginning, as quoted by FARPost.

Khumalo praised the team’s improved organisation and structure, contrasting it with last season’s struggles. “There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. There’s so much change,” he said, referring to the noticeable improvements since the Toyota Cup and the Gallants match.

Organization, character, and youth integration

Khumalo pinpointed three major elements that have transformed the team under Nabi’s guidance: organisation, character, and the integration of young talent. He acknowledged the squad’s tenacity, especially after conceding an early goal. Shabalala’s equaliser and Vilakazi’s decisive goal showcased the players’ fighting spirit.

“It’s good we won the first game for the morale of the players and the fans,” Khumalo explained. “But I see things differently from the fans and media. I know there is a lot of work to do here, but for now, I congratulate my players on their good attitude and the win.”

Emphasising young talent

Khumalo highlighted Nabi’s strategic approach to introducing youth into the squad. “He’s very calculative in his introduction of young players,” he stated. Both Shabalala and Zwane started the match, while Wandile Duba and Vilakazi made crucial late-game contributions. This calculated integration reflects a commitment to nurturing young talent while reducing pressure on them.

“If you remember the interview [Mduduzi] Shabalala did when he was asked what was making Relebohile Mofokeng shine, he noted that the difference was that Chiefs weren’t getting results; there was so much pressure on the young players at Chiefs,” Khumalo remarked. “With the introduction of youngsters, you can see Nabi is protecting them.”

Road ahead: Challenges and optimism

While Khumalo acknowledges the positive momentum, he cautions that rebuilding will not be easy. “This is a game of football, and there are three possible outcomes: a win, a loss, or a draw,” he warned. He urges fans to consider the nuances of each game, especially during challenging moments.

Khumalo remains optimistic about Nabi’s vision, comparing the rebuilding process to that of Sundowns, which can take several years. “Building a team can take five years. Sundowns started to develop their team very slowly,” he pointed out, underscoring the importance of patience in creating a formidable squad.
