Kaizer Chiefs’ woes: Why the Hanamub deal fell apart

Kaizer Chiefs’ woes revealed as reason for Hanamub rejection unpacked, according to Soccer Laduma.

Chiefs aimed to strengthen their squad this transfer window but faced disappointment with their targets. A key deal that didn’t materialise was the signing of Riaan Hanamub from AmaZulu. Sources reveal the twist that led to this failed transfer, emphasising the club’s struggle to negotiate effectively.

Amakhosi’s recent signing of Bradley Cross from Golden Arrows highlighted the club’s urgent need for reinforcements after their attempt to secure Hanamub fell through. The deal relied on a proposed exchange involving Sibongiseni ‘Ox’ Mthethwa, but AmaZulu’s refusal to accept a player swap ultimately derailed negotiations.

Insider Insights: What went wrong

An insider disclosed, “There was an offer from Kaizer Chiefs for Riaan (Hanamub) which AmaZulu FC were considering, but things changed when Chiefs asked for a player swap plus money for Hanamub.” This adjustment in negotiation tactics shifted the balance, as AmaZulu preferred a straightforward cash deal over an exchange.

AmaZulu had valued Hanamub at approximately R8 million. “If Chiefs had managed to pay the R8 million without involving the swap deal with Ox, they could have signed Hanamub before even considering Cross from Golden Arrows,” the source added. Instead, Chiefs proposed R4 million plus Mthethwa, which fell short of AmaZulu’s expectations.

Ditlhokwe’s decision: Why he chose to stay at Naturena

In a twist of fate for the squad, Kaizer Chiefs defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe opted to remain with the team despite rumours of a loan move for the upcoming 2024/2025 season. This decision reflects his evolving role within the club, shedding light on the dynamics at play.

After joining Chiefs from SuperSport United, Ditlhokwe quickly made an impact, notching up 21 appearances. However, the arrival of Tunisian coach Nesreddine Nabi shifted the landscape. Nabi indicated early on that Ditlhokwe would not fit into his plans, leading to the acquisition of Rushwin Dortley and Bradley Cross.

Despite these challenges, insiders confirm Ditlhokwe’s commitment to serve as a backup for Dortley, who is now the primary left-sided centre-back due to Edmilson Dove’s serious injury. The defender understands the need to refine his ability to play out from the back, a skill Nabi expects from all his players.

As Chiefs navigate this tumultuous transfer window, the failed pursuit of Riaan Hanamub and Ditlhokwe’s choice to stay reveal critical strategic decisions for the club. With the pressure on to improve their squad, fans will watch closely as the season unfolds. Will the Chiefs find a way to make the right moves, or will they continue to face challenges in the market?
