Rodrigo, a Leeds United forward, is being courted by Qatari club Al Rayyan, adding to his list of suitors, which is said to include Real Madrid. After the club’s relegation to the Championship, the Spain international is expected to leave Elland Road this summer.
The 32-year-old is thought to have a release provision in his contract that allows him to leave Leeds for £2.6 million in the upcoming transfer window, with the Whites set to take a significant blow on the £27 million they paid Valencia four years ago.
According to Portuguese journalist Bruno Andrade (via LeedsLive), Rodrigo is already planning a move to the Middle East, which would be a lucrative move for the midfielder. “Rodrigo Moreno is close to leaving Leeds for Al Rayyan…to be the Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim’s first major reinforcement in Qatar,” Andrade tweeted.
Rodrigo, who scored 28 goals for Leeds last season, including 15 in all competitions, has been linked with a move to La Liga with Real Madrid as well as a return to the Premier League with Everton. The attacker’s father, who acts as his agent, recently mentioned Sevilla as a possible summer destination.
“We have nothing firm,” he said to ABC Sevilla. “I was recently made aware of an interest, but nothing concrete.” I have an appointment with the people of the club (Leeds) right now. We will fix all of those problems, and we will know the results soon.
“Nothing has been fixed. But always Sevilla. Sevilla will always be a team that we are interested in.”
Meanwhile, former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has said that in order to secure promotion, Leeds should go all out to appoint Scott Parker as manager.
“I think Scott Parker is the right man,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider. “They should get it done.” After being demoted, you focus on bringing in a manager for a year, and then you (a) change (in) personnel, because football is ruthless.”
“It’s all about promotion,” he continues, “complete projects are more for when you’re in the Premier League and you’re newly presented with it.” Leeds don’t care how they play; all that matters is that they get promoted this season, which does not necessitate a project.”
Agbonlahor continued by emphasizing football’s harsh reality, saying, “Managers also leave when they have better opportunities, and football is ruthless.”
