This week, Leeds United have reportedly brought in Francis Coquelin for a training session to evaluate whether the veteran midfielder could be a valuable addition to their struggling midfield.
Manager Daniel Farke said that Leeds are looking into free-agent options after injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev. In recent weeks, the Yorkshire club has been linked with former Nottingham Forest veteran Cheikhou Kouyaté.
Leeds currently rely on Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell as their only senior midfield options. They demonstrated their ability to manage the midfield during their match against Sheffield United. However, the lack of depth in this area is concerning; an injury to either player wou
Therefore, the club must consider whether to bring in a new signing or depend on their first team and youth academy to maintain stability until January, when the transfer window reopens.
Leeds to sign a free agent soon?
Football Insider reported on Saturday, citing sources, that Daniel Farke has approved Leeds United’s plan to sign a free agent in the coming weeks. However, the report also mentions that Farke has been hesitant about this move, as it can be challenging to get a player back up to speed after being out of action for a while.
The 33-year-old has plenty of experience in England having made 160 appearances for Arsenal and with the veteran being an option for the Whites. During his time at Arsenal, the midfielder won two FA Cups and two Community Shields.
Moreover, the player also won the UEFA Europa League in 2021 with Villarreal and the Copa del Rey with Valencia in 2019. As a result, this signing would bring trophy experience to the squad.
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if Leeds can sign a player because the matches are beginning to pile up with another contest on Tuesday and stay on par in the race for the two automatic promotion spots to the Premier League.
Leeds need to regroup quickly as they take on Watford this Tuesday night, following the latter’s Saturday loss to Luton Town. The Whites are pushing for a second straight win to maintain their grip on second place as the competition heats up.
