Daniel Farke says £4.6m Leeds United player could return to squad at Sunderland after injury

Daniel Farke has shared a new injury update on his Leeds United squad ahead of the upcoming trip to Sunderland.

Leeds face a very short turnaround between Tuesday night’s draw at Norwich City and the game at the Stadium of Light, which only makes the current injury crisis all the more difficult to deal with.

Ethan Ampadu, Manor Solomon, Max Wober, Dan James and Isaac Schmidt were all out at Carrow Road, while Ilia Gruev had to be replaced inside 20 minutes.

Farke says Leeds are still unsure on the extent of Gruev‘s injury but did confirm he will go for scans later on Wednesday, where they are likely to learn the severity.

Leeds’ bench was extremely weak in the game at Norwich and so Farke will be absolutely itching to get some bodies back as soon as possible.

Farke shares new update on Isaac Schmidt ahead of Leeds vs Sunderland

As mentioned, the 72 hours between both matches makes it all the more difficult for Farke to bring back any of Leeds’ injured bodies at Sunderland.

Ampadu, James and Wober are all confirmed to be out longer term, while there had been some hope at least one of Schmidt or Solomon could return.

After only a brief cameo against Coventry City, the £4.6 million summer signing was absent at Norwich due to some issues with his glutes.

However, speaking in his pre-match press conference, Farke says Schmidt is the one who is most likely to return to the squad providing he comes through the last training session.

He said: “Like always, after a competitive game a few hits and knocks but no one ruled out for the game. We have a few injured players from the last few weeks. I don’t expect one to come back.

“Isaac Schmidt looks a bit better so we will try tomorrow, our last training session before the game. If he comes through, he could be involved but I expect him to be the only one who could return back.”

Farke also shares Manor Solomon injury update

Alongside Schmidt, Solomon was the one other player Leeds may have harnessed some hope could be back at Sunderland.

Farke mentioned in his pre-Coventry City press conference he was hoping he’d be back for one of the two matches this week.

However, having missed the trip at Norwich, it also looks as though Solomon will be absent on Wearside having been forced to miss training once again.

He said: “We were hoping he could be involved today but it was not possible. I expect the game comes a bit too soon for him. We have to go with what we’ve got.”
