Karl Darlow is scheduled to have a medical at Leeds today in preparation for a £400,000 move.
Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow is scheduled to fly to Leeds United for a physical today in preparation for a permanent signing of around £400,000.
Eddie Howe confirmed to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie after Newcastle’s Premier League Summer Series game against Chelsea in Atlanta on Wednesday evening that the 32-year-old would leave the Magpies’ pre-season tour of the United States to complete his move to Leeds.
While there have been plenty of outgoings – with Rodrigo, Robin Koch, Marc Roca, Tyler Roberts, Joel Robles, Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen all leaving Elland Road this summer – It’s been a slow start to the transfer window for the Whites in terms of incomings as they prepare for life back in the Championship.
Ethan Ampadu became the first signing of Daniel Farke’s tenure earlier this month, signing from Chelsea in a deal worth a reported £7 million, and now it seems Darlow is set to follow.
The experienced shot-stopper has looked likely to leave Newcastle throughout the summer after falling down the pecking order at St James’ Park and spending the second half of last season on loan at Hull City.
Darlow has been connected with a number of Championship clubs, including Blackburn Rovers, Hull City, Middlesbrough, and Leeds, but last week it was reported that he was on his way to Premier League side Bournemouth.
However, Leeds are thought to have stayed in contact with the goalie over the past week and appear to have secured his services.
Howe confirmed to Downie after Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League Summer Series late on Wednesday evening that Darlow will skip the Mags’ pre-season tour of the United States to attend his medical in Leeds today.
The sum is thought to be around £400,000, which appears to be a steal given that he was rumoured to be available early this month.
It remains to be seen whether there are any add-on fees involved.
How lengthy is Karl Darlow’s contract with Newcastle United?
The amount is even more impressive from a Leeds standpoint, given that Darlow’s contract at Newcastle still has two years left on it.
According to Capology, he is paid £30,000 per week at St James’ Park, which explains why the Premier League club was willing to let him go so cheaply.
Darlow’s departure brings to an end a nine-year spell with the Toon, during which he made 100 appearances after joining from Nottingham Forest in 2014.
