Leeds about to make a huge mistake as their 2020 signing appears to be leaving

If Leeds United fans were asked which right-back they would like to sell this summer, it’s unlikely that many would choose Cody Drameh.

For a while now, the Whites have struggled at right-back. Since the start of last season, Luke Ayling has struggled with injury and form. And Rasmus Kristensen has yet to demonstrate anything that suggests he will be Ayling’s long-term replacement at Elland Road.

Cody Drameh, on the other hand, has been impressive once again while on loan. The 21-year-old is doing well for Luton Town, who appear to be destined for a play-off berth, if not more.

It follows a similarly outstanding season with Cardiff last year. Despite joining the club in the middle of the season, Drameh went on to win the Young Player and Player of the Season titles before returning to Leeds.

So it appears to be a clear choice for the Whites as they consider who will be the long-term answer at right-back starting next season.

The issue is that Drameh appears to be someone else’s player by the start of next season.

According to reports this week, Drameh’s departure before the start of pre-season is practically certain. His contract has one year remaining. As a result, Leeds may only have one more chance to cash in before losing him for free in a year.

You can definitely understand Drameh’s stance. He has had two superb loan spells in the Championship. And yet, he seems to be no closer to getting his chance at Elland Road.

And it is not as though the two players ahead of him in the pecking order have been so much better. In fact, had Leeds not spent so much on Kristensen in the summer, there is surely no way that Drameh would have had such a small number of chances.

Drameh will not be done for a while. But he’s doing everything he can to prove himself. And he clearly has a lot of promise.

You could understand why he would struggle for chances if he was vying for a spot out wide further up the pitch.

However, right-back is a major problem for Leeds at the moment. So selling Drameh during the summer has the potential to be a huge blunder.

According to stories in the Yorkshire Evening Post this week, it appears to be more than a possible possibility.
