Leeds sink in £21.4m battle with bitter rivals and Southampton to sign La Liga winger

According to the Spanish publication AS, Leeds United are one among several clubs interested in Granada’s Albanian winger Myrto Uzuni, who helped Granada secure promotion in 2022-23.

The 31-year-old Albanian international had a role in 28 goals and assists in Spain’s second division, scoring 23 and setting up five more. He is still at Granada, who have returned to La Liga. Their main man, Uzuni.

Little surprise then, that the 28-year-old wide man is attracting interest. AS claim that alongside Leeds, Southampton and Brentford are also keen. In Europe, Ligue 1 side Reims and Galatasaray are looking.

That interest has emerged ‘in recent days’, as have ‘sirens’ from Saudi Arabia. But Granada are holding firm, insisting that any exit must see interested parties pay his full release clause – worth a £21.4m fee.

At the start of the window, you might have thought that Leeds were well-stocked on the flanks. But, injury to Cree Summerville and the refusal to play of Willy Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra has left us short.

Helder Costa is not playing as the club and he have agreed a move needs to happen. Jack Harrison has left Leeds to join Everton on loan. That leaves us with just two options. Ian Poveda and Dan James.

Even against West Brom, Poveda was missing with an adductor injury. It saw Jamie Shackleton play on the right for a second time in as many games, after doing so against Birmingham. Leeds need wingers.

Uzuni would be a wonderful signing. But it is a risk. Expensive, without doubt. Especially, for a player who is 28 – and has never played in England. Judging by the stats, he would be an impressive signing.
