Leeds United beat championship rivals in battle to sign 22-year-old Heerenveen star

Leeds United reportedly started a bidding war for Heerenveen right-back Milan van Ewijk, putting uncertainty on the futures of both Leeds right-backs, but the Dutchman is on his way to Coventry City.

Given the lack of defensive depth at Leeds, full-backs are almost certainly on the agenda for the remainder of the summer transfer season.

Although left-back is the more pressing issue, the club has been connected with a transfer for Heerenveen right-back Milan van Ewijk, according to writer Sander de Vries.

Coventry City are said to have tabled a new and improved offer for the 22-year-old right-back, aiming to turn the screw before the Whites strike – and de Vries has now claimed a deal is close with the Sky Blues.

Here, we look at two knock-on effects that van Ewijk’s arrival could have had at Leeds…

Cody Drameh would surely leave

Signing a 22-year-old right-back while you have one a year younger that is aiming to make the starting spot his own is a damning indictment.

Registering interest in van Ewijk and pursuing him would strongly suggest that Cody Drameh already has one foot out of the door this summer.

While his performances in the side indicate the opposite of him pushing to leave or even wanting to, he has just a year left on his deal and we’re no closer to seeing that resolved.

Van Ewijk’s signing would mean that it would simply be a matter of time before the young right-back sought new pastures.

Leeds not signing van Ewijk gives us chance that Drameh will be our starter this season.

Should Drameh be first-choice right-back?

Luke Ayling is another player who will be considering his future after signing a very good young right-back.

His personality in the locker room cannot be overstated, but he will almost certainly have a diminished position in the starting lineup this season even if Drameh stays, let alone if we make a fresh addition there.

Ayling is also in the final year of his contract, and his starting prospects will very certainly change as a result of relegation.

Ayling must be wondering what his future holds, as Leeds also takes Sam Byram on trial.
