Leeds United manager Javi Gracia has predicted Georginio Rutter’s future and explained why the record signing has played so many minutes during his tenure.
Rutter, a French forward, has been with Leeds United for just over three months after joining from Hoffenheim for an original £28 million cost in the January transfer window. The 20-year-old has made just one league start since joining and has played only 349 minutes of football in total, including eight substitute appearances and two FA Cup starts.
Rutter made his only league start in last month’s 1-0 loss at Chelsea, and since then he has only made three substitute appearances against Brighton, Arsenal, and Crystal Palace. The club record signing was an unused substitute in previous games against Wolves and Nottingham Forest, but Gracia believes Rutter has a “brilliant future” and is ultimately trying to do what is best for the squad.
When asked why Rutter hasn’t played much for a team struggling for goals, Gracia explained: “He had some chances.” He’s started playing certain games and spent some time in others during the time I’ve been here.
“It’s true that he hasn’t had the consistency in games, but I’m confident that when we have more chances, he will show his quality and help the team.” But I must make a decision and choose what I believe is best for the squad. I don’t know what more to say.”
When asked if Rutter had adjusted to his move to Leeds and if he could have an impact right now, Gracia replied, “Of course.” Not only Georgi, but I believe all new players who come to a new country, a new competition, require time. But not in particular Georgi. Georgi is doing a great job, he’s a kind guy, and I’m confident in his future.
