His next destination remained a source of speculation all summer, however, with Blackburn Rovers, Bournemouth, Hull, Middlesbrough and Leeds all among the clubs linked.
As recently as last week, it appeared as though Darlow could be on his way to the Cherries, with The Northern Echo reporting that they were leading the race – but it now seems that they’ve turned their attentions elsewhere in the market and Leeds could be set to win the race.
According to Romano, Bournemouth are now set to sign Inter Milan’s Romanian goalkeeper Ionut Radu on loan, thereby putting them out of contention for Darlow, whom they had previously been linked with.
Leeds’ pursuit of Newcastle United’s goalkeeper has been extensively reported since then, with Graham Smyth, Phil Hay, and Keith Downie all confirming that talks to bring the experienced goalie to Elland Road are ongoing and at an advanced stage.
Hay disclosed to The Athletic that Farke’s team was also interested in Norwich City’s Angus Gunn and Preston North End’s Freddie Woodman as Darlow replacements. However, it appears that the Whites have practically secured their first-choice.
Darlow is on his way to Leeds to complete the deal, with Fabrizio Romano revealing: “Leeds United are closing in on Karl Darlow deal as the verbal agreement is in place with Newcastle, waiting to clarify on final details.” “We’re almost there.”
Darlow’s departure could be soon, according to Eddie Howe, who told Chronicle Live last night: “Karl is a possible one that might happen in the next few days.”
“Karl will undoubtedly go with our best wishes.” He has been a tremendous asset to the football club. We appreciate him, but we can’t field a team with five goalkeepers.”
