Leeds United have hit an obstacle in their hopes of signing Joe Rodon on a permanent deal this summer as Southampton are preparing a bid for the defender, according to TEAMtalk.
James Marshment reported on 13 June that Saints were among the suitors for Tottenham man Rodon, who kept 17 clean sheets in 43 Championship appearances in 2023-24.
It is believed the Welsh international would be open to returning to Elland Road on a permanent deal, but Leeds must sell before they can spend this summer.
The report predicts the fee demanded by Spurs for Rodon to be around the £12-15m mark.
Leeds United keep hope of Rodon deal
Rodon played arguably the best football of his career so far under Daniel Farke in the recent season, and would have been a key part of promotion had Leeds managed to beat Saints in the play-off final.
Southampton now have the Premier League pull that the Whites would have had, though there is every possibility the player himself would still prefer to come back to Elland Road; the two are in the market for similar transfer targets, as both reportedly vie for Coventry City’s Callum O’Hare.
Rodon only has 15 top-flight matches for Spurs under his belt since joining from hometown club Swansea City back in 2020, and at 26 years of age he knows the next contract has to be just right.
The defender will be looking further ahead – particularly the very feasible idea that Leeds and Southampton may have swapped positions by this time next year.
Leeds’ priority this month is to balance the books by reclaiming funds in player sales, before any investments of fees as high as £15m can be made.
