Leeds United’s £20,000-a-week attacker might return to Italy

According to a new speculation, Leeds United starlet Wilfried Gnonto could make a return to Serie A during the summer transfer window.

The £20,000-a-week forward has quickly established himself as an exciting figure at Elland Road, having moved from FC Zurich last year, with the Italian contributing two goals and four assists in the Premier League this season.

The Whites, on the other hand, are trying to stay in the top flight, and they need outcomes to go their way this weekend if they are to avoid playing Championship football for the first time since the 2019/20 season.

Should Leeds fail, a number of key players could leave, and Gnonto could be one of them, despite the fact that his current contract doesn’t end until the summer of 2027.

Calcio Web [via Sport Witness] reports that “there is an agreement” for Gnonto to return to Serie A at the end of the season, with Leeds currently facing relegation. The source mentions Sassuolo, who are intending to take a “decisive shot” to sign the 19-year-old, and a deal worth €10-15 million (£8.6-13 million) “could be concluded”.

In truth, it’s difficult to blame Gnonto for wishing to leave the Whites if they are relegated this weekend, as the kid is unlikely to want to play Championship football next season. Despite his young age, this athlete has already earned 10 caps for Italy and has been described as “very direct” by Gary Neville, who is a “huge admirer” of him.

Losing such a brilliant young footballer so soon would be a huge loss for Leeds and show how disappointing this season has been for them, and if the Italian does demand to return to his homeland in the summer, the club must acquire as much money as possible for him.

If the Whites pull off the impossible on Sunday and stay in the Premier League, the situation may change, but for now, fans may have to accept that this weekend may be the last time they see Gnonto in a Leeds shirt.
