With relegation essentially guaranteed, Leeds United have decided not to offer one of their long-serving players a new contract at the end of the current season.
If the worst happens and the Yorkshire-based club is relegated to the Championship, they will have to be careful with their pay bill, and some players from the current squad may have to leave.
Javi Gracia’s brief is unequivocal. There are eight Premier League games remaining, with 24 points on the line.
His task is made all the more difficult by the fact that of those eight matches, four are against Liverpool, Man City, Newcastle and Tottenham, whilst three of the other four are all against clubs that are also caught up in the relegation mire: Leicester City, Bournemouth and West Ham United.
Leeds are clear of the bottom three at present, so their immediate destiny remains in their hands.
Adam Forshaw, who has been with the club since 2017, is one player who will not be returning next season regardless of whether they play in the English top flight or the second tier.
According to Football Insider, the player’s contract expires at the conclusion of the season, and the team will not renew it.
According to WhoScored, the 31-year-old has only played 248 minutes in six appearances in all competitions this season, thus a trade is the best outcome for all sides.
