According to Turkish media, the battle to bring Gedson Fernandes from Besiktas to the Premier League is heating up, and for £11.4m, Leeds United should be right in the middle of it, with Tyler Adams’ injury showing a lack of midfield depth.
Many Premier League fans may recognize Gedson’s name. That comes after Jose Mourinho signed the Portugal international on an 18-month loan at Tottenham. He returned to Benfica after only a year of those 18 months.
He finally left Benfica and joined Besiktas on a permanent basis last summer, and he has since been impressive. Gedson has been the midfield heartbeat in a team that also features Dele Alli, Nathan Redmond, and Arthur Masuaku.
Gedson has played in 17 of Besiktas’ 30 games this season, missing only one. Besiktas is on a five-game winning streak, and Gedson has played a key role in that, starting all five games. His shape has piqued my interest.
Indeed, Turkish outlet Fanatik say Premier League sides Villa, Fulham and Palace are keen – as are Lazio and Jose Mourinho’s Roma. A fee of £11.4m is required – and such is his form and price tag, Leeds should be interested.
Leeds should be right in the thick of race to sign Gedson Fernandes
Gedson is the type of player who would be ideal for providing cover at Elland Road. The type of guy who can play holding midfield, box-to-box Weston McKennie, or even as a 10.Mourinho described himself as “really, really good.”
With Gedson still only 24 years old and with the technical skill and adaptability to play in this Leeds team, a fee of £11.4 million would be a steal. Due to Adams’ injury, Leeds must throw their hat in the ring to land him.
The absence of Adams has underlined a paucity of midfield alternatives. McKennie and Marc Roca remain first choices, but they are the only two obvious choices. Adam Forshaw will leave this summer, and Gedson would be a good addition.
