Amid all the chaos surrounding Georginio Rutter’s exit, Leeds United remain in the market for a new winger to replace Crysencio Summerville.
It is now two weeks since Summerville sealed his move to West Ham United and yet Leeds are seemingly no closer to finding a successor for the Championship’s POTS.
Leeds had told the media they would be ready to green light a move for a new winger as soon as Summerville was confirmed as leaving, but that could not be further from the truth.
Daniel Farke ramped up the pressure on the 49ers and his recruitment team in his pre-West Bromwich Albion press conference on Thursday.
The Leeds boss again spoke publicly on the positions he still wants addressing in the final week of the window, with the total number of signings wanted now up to four.
Leeds eyeing Rangers star Rabbi Matondo
Even though Leeds have money to spend after generating the highest amount of money through player sales across the whole of Europe, it is going to be difficult to replace the output of Rutter and Summerville at this level.
To justify selling both, Leeds are going to need at least one real marquee arrival and with that in mind, this latest link from Football Scotland does not make sense.
They claim Leeds have added Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo to their list of targets to replace Summerville, suggesting their is ‘strong interest’ from Farke.
It is said Leeds are considering whether to sign Matondo either permanently, or on an initial loan deal that includes a future buy option.
The 23-year-old is expected to leave Rangers in the next couple of weeks having fallen down the pecking order under manager Philippe Clement.
Across his 31 appearances in all competitions last season, Matondo scored six goals and provided four assists. In no world would he ever be able to replace Summerville’s output.
What Pep Guardiola once said about Leeds target Matondo
Though still very young, back in the earlier days of his career, Matondo was regarded as one of the top young talents in the United Kingdom.
Matondo is a product of the Manchester City academy and even before he had made a senior appearance, Schalke were prepared to pay £10 million to sign him.
Just a couple of years after his arrival in Germany, Stoke City were also prepared to pay big money for him, and so it is clear he has lost his way somewhat since Pep Guardiola hailed him as a top talent.
Via GOAL in 2019, he said: “Yeah I have some comments. They are interested in another young player. I know how good he is, incredibly fast winger, and a young talent. This club is working so good.”
