Left-back shows Leeds what they’re missing with gorgeous assist four minutes into Sunday debut

Leeds United are expected to bring in a new full-back this summer with cover required on the left of the defence, but one option has shown Leeds what they’re missing after his debut on Sunday.

Junior Firpo remains the only left-footed left-back in Daniel Farke’s squad, while the injury-prone Sam Byram is providing cover on the left and right. Clearly, Leeds need another full-back before the deadline.

The Whites have been linked with a number of full-backs. Just over the weekend, it was claimed that Leeds expressed interest in 33-year-old Michael Lang, with the Switzerland international is a free agent.

Another is Spanish left-back Hugo Bueno, but the Whites have missed out on the Wolves 21-year-old. The “excellent” Bueno joined Feyenoord last week after Leeds were linked with a move for Bueno.Feyenoord player Hugo Bueno is playing during the match PEC vs. Feyenoord at the MAC3Park Stadium for the Dutch Eredivisie 2nd round season 2024-20...

Feyenoord only managed a draw in their opening league game of the season after Arne Slot’s exit, but returned to their best on Sunday with a huge 5-1 win over Zwolle as Bueno made his Feyenoord debut.

A game which also included Anselmo MacNulty, a Spain-born Ireland U21 star linked with Leeds. But it was Bueno that came out on top, and it took him just four minutes to lay on his first Feyenoord assist.

Picking the ball up on the left flank level with the penalty area, he produced a few step overs before whipping a gorgeous cross into the box for Igor Paixao to head home, 15 seconds in the video below.

Leeds have an issue trying to sign Premier League players on loan

Soon after the links with Bueno, a report detailed why Leeds have an issue with signing Premier League players on loan. Premier League clubs are only going to allow fringe players to go on loan if they start.

But would Bueno have started for Leeds? Or simply, would he have been brought to Elland Road to be cover for Firpo – meaning there is no difference to his role at Wolves, to his proposed role at Leeds.

The report states that it saw Leeds miss out on Fabio Carvalho in January, a new signing for Brentford in a £27.5m deal. Carvalho joined Hull in January on loan purely because Leeds couldn’t provide assurances.
