Major squad setback strikes Leeds United

After two consecutive wins following the FIFA international break, Leeds United couldn’t carry their momentum in a scoreless draw against Bristol City at Ashton Gate Stadium on Saturday.

Leeds United had previously enjoyed a 2-0 win over Sheffield United and a 2-1 victory over Watford, both at Elland Road. With this recent success, Daniel Farke’s team looked to bring their positive form on the road against mid-table Bristol City.

In the first half, Leeds United created more opportunities with eight shots compared to Bristol City’s three, but the teams went into halftime goalless. Leeds United put up nine more shots in the second half, while the home side managed only one. Despite Leeds United’s efforts, neither team could break the deadlock.

The Whites didn’t have their talented full-back Junior Firpo, who was suspended for the match due to yellow card accumulation. Nonetheless, the Dominican Republic international will be returning to the Leeds United lineup against Plymouth Argyle; it will be a case of one-in, one-out.

Right-back Jayden Bogle will miss the next match after receiving a one-game suspension for a foul on substitute Sinclair Armstrong in the 67th minute. This yellow card marked Bogle’s fifth of the season, ruling him out for the game against Wayne Rooney’s Pilgrims.

Since his summer move from Sheffield United, Bogle has started every Championship match, stepping in for Archie Gray, who joined Tottenham from Elland Road.

Sam Byram will likely switch to the left when Firpo returns from his ban this weekend. Byram put in a solid and dependable performance at Bristol City, so he should handle the transition smoothly.

Despite the draw, Leeds United remain outside the two automatic Premier League promotion spots, trailing first-place Sunderland by five points and Burnley having the goal differential tiebreaker over Daniel Farke and his team.

With such a tight race, a win over Plymouth Argyle is ideal, considering they’re at the bottom of the Championship table, so it’s an opponent that the Whites should be taking all three points. A draw or even defeat would be tough to take for the squad, who are trying to avoid the Championship Play-Off for a second straight season.
