According to journalist Beren Cross, Leeds United will have to wait for Premier League clubs to make transfer decisions in a domino effect development, with loans playing a role.
In a Q&A session with Leeds Live [3 August], the writer revealed that, as a result of their new Championship status, Leeds have dropped further down the pecking order and will have to wait for other clubs to begin moving before making their judgments.
Loan deals, according to Cross, will play a role in any transfer delays, as there will be Premier League players Leeds wants who won’t be available until the middle of August at the earliest.
Cross said in the Q&A [3 August, 16:02] when asked if Leeds will need to sell to purchase this summer due to a lack of new signings: “At centre-back, there is no need to sell before they acquire someone.” Loans will also play a role in this delay.
“There will be Premier League players Leeds may want to loan who will not be available until at least mid-August.” This is the issue that Leeds face as a Championship team. They are now further down the domino effect and must wait for others to move the pieces.”
While it may be frustrating for fans to see the club sit back and wait for others to make signings, patience can frequently pay off with loan options becoming available once Premier League clubs examine their rosters following the start of the season.
The Premier League season begins on August 11, and in the weeks leading up to the end of the transfer window, players and clubs will begin to make moves when they realize players will not be getting the playing time they expected.
These reforms will allow teams like Leeds to swoop in and bring in high-level players on loan, as they did so successfully last season. Burnley, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland all benefited from Premier League loans as they finished in the top six.
On loan from top-flight teams, Amad Diallo, Cameron Archer, Taylor Harwood-Bellis (who has been linked with Leeds) and James McAttee all stood out, illustrating once again that patience is a virtue in the transfer market.
In other Leeds United news, the club has made contact with a Champions League club about a defender.
