The newspaper stated on their website on Wednesday night (12 April) that Premier League teams will vote on banning front-of-shirt gambling sponsors on Thursday (13 April).
The voluntary suggestion is expected to be forwarded on to Premier League shareholders, “with the compromise being that gambling companies are allowed as a sleeve sponsor.”
According to the Mail, Premier League clubs are taking this step to avoid the Government fully prohibiting them from advertising gambling companies.
Leeds would have until the start of the 2026/27 season to find a new front-of-shirt sponsor if they dropped SBOTOP.
Removing betting companies off the front of shirts is worthless until gambling advertisements are fully prohibited.
It has completely engulfed the Premier League. If not on the front of the shirt, it will be on the sleeves. If not on the sleeves, it will be on the advertising hoardings surrounding the stadiums. It’ll be thrust in your face during television commercial breaks, and bookies will be looking for the next mug to rip money off.
The Premier League clubs appear to be terrified of losing bookmakers as sponsors.
They’re attempting to reach a solution that defeats the purpose of the Government’s attempt to prohibit gambling sponsors from the sport.
Sure, these sponsors pay more money, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to what clubs like Leeds make from Premier League TV rights.
Angus Kinnear needs to read the room and figure out what fans, not just Leeds fans, want.
