Reports: Two top-tier clubs already plotting move to sign ‘phenomenal’ Leeds star despite 49ers decision

Leeds United fans were somewhat underwhelmed on the final day of the transfer window but their mood was instantly lifted the morning after deadline day, by a Leeds announcement.

Leeds confirmed on social media that 20-year-old gem Wilfried Gnonto had put pen to paper on a new deal until the summer of 2028. Reports say that there is no dreaded release clause in Gnonto’s contract.

 

Gnonto had initially signed for Leeds in the summer of 2022, penning a five-year deal. But the new deal shows a signal of intent from Gnonto, finally realising his future is in Yorkshire, committing to Leeds.

But that has not stopped clubs from showing interest in the “phenomenal” Gnonto, with a return to Italy always on the cards for the Italy U21 star who starred in his nation’s 7-0 win over San Marino this week.

Two clubs already eyeing January move to sign Gnonto

In the summer, Everton were linked with Gnonto again. There was also the potential of a return to Inter Milan for Gnonto, with the Nerrazzuri looking to sign homegrown players before the summer deadline.

Then, it was claimed Ethan Ampadu’s old side Spezia were rivalling Parma and Genoa for Gnonto. But of course, the Italy international remained at Elland Road and looks set to play a key role for Leeds this term.

Italian outlet Milan Live now claim that Alberto Gilardino is keen on luring Gnonto to Parma in January despite the attacker’s new deal, and newly-promoted Parma remain interested in signing the Leeds star.

Italy U21 co-ordinator shares why Gnonto was texting on bench

This week, Gnonto was subbed at half-time during Italy U21’s 7-0 win over San Marino with his side already winning 2-0. It alerted Leeds, with a Leeds official instantly double-checking on Gnonto’s fitness.

Gnonto looked to immediately allay Leeds’ fears by stating there was no injury. He was spotted on the sub’s bench on his phone, and co-ordinator Maurizio Viscidi said why following the big Thursday win.

He says that Gnonto was simply telling Leeds that there was no injury, and that he had been subbed to avoid suspension: “In going back from the locker room to the bench, he received an alarmed message.

“It asked why he had been substituted. He wanted to reassure the club it was not a fitness issue. Perhaps he got the timing of it wrong, but it was a gesture of respect towards his club that needed reassuring.”
