Rio Ferdinand couldn’t control himself after what Jermaine Pennant mistakenly called the 49ers, who are the main backers at Leeds United.
The pair discussed Arsenal set-piece Nicolas Jover on Rio Ferdinand Presents [16 September] after the Gunners scored another set-piece goal to beat Tottenham 1-0 on Sunday [15 September] in the North London derby.
Pennant joked that Jover could work for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL, also operated by 49ers Enterprises, but made a hilarious hiccup when referencing the Leeds backers.
Pennant said he “wouldn’t be surprised if I seen him going 69ers”, before correcting himself by saying: “It’s 49ers not 69ers. The 69ers is something else.”
At that point Ferdinand burst into hysterics at the faux pas.
Leeds United struck lucky with 49ers Enterprises
Given the ongoing ownership debacles at Premier League clubs such as Everton and Chelsea to name just a couple, the Whites should feel lucky to be under the stewardship of 49ers Enterprises.
The American owners plan to expand Elland Road to a capacity of 53,000 [The Square Ball], with Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear confirming that the 15,000-seat expansion is very close to completion.
Daniel Farke has received backing from the club’s ownership after the Championship play-off final defeat to Southampton last season and, despite overseeing the departures of key players over the summer, received big-money fees for their prized assets leaving the club in a healthy financial position.
The Whites found it difficult to navigate the final weeks of the transfer window before the 30 August deadline. However, the 49ers kept the ongoing negotiations airtight to ensure Farke received the required additions ahead of another promotion challenge this season.
Leeds supporters are seeing genuine strides from the club’s ownership to improve conditions both and off the pitch and, despite a slow start to the Championship season, there is plenty of optimism around the Whites’ prospects this season under the guise of 49ers Enterprises.
