Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier is facing criticism after his mistake in stoppage time allowed Sunderland to score, resulting in a 2-2 draw and costing the Whites valuable points. Nonetheless, one Sunderland player is taking a cheeky dig at the Frenchman.

Daniel Farke and his team got off to a rough start, with Chris Rigg scoring for Sunderland just nine minutes in. But the Whites quickly bounced back when Joël Piroe found the net in the 22nd minute.

The Whites went into halftime tied 1-1. In the second half, Junior Firpo put Leeds ahead with a goal in the 56th minute, and it seemed like that would be enough for the win. However, in the final moments of stoppage time, Illan Meslier made a costly error, allowing Sunderland to snatch a late equalizer.

Alan Browne’s cross deflected off Firpo’s head, and as Meslier tried to catch it, the ball slipped through his fingers and rolled into the net, earning Sunderland a vital point.

Sunderland ace takes a sarcastic swipe at Illan Meslier

Following the surprising result, Browne took a sarcastic swipe at Meslier as the Black Cats appeared ready to accept the loss heading into the FIFA international break.

“The keeper chucked it in the net so fair play to him,” Browne told Sky Sports Football. “Nice assist.”

Leeds will be frustrated with their latest result, especially after letting points slip just as the international window begins. With the team dealing with an injury crisis, fans are likely to feel anxious as players head off for national duty.

Farke and his squad need to regroup and come back strong after the break, with a crucial clash against promotion rivals Sheffield United at Elland Road on October 18. Moreover, Leeds have drawn against Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion while losing to Burnley.

Not securing victories over these promotional rivals could come back to haunt them later down the season if the Championship race remains as tight as it’s looking. As a result, beating the Blades would be the perfect way to overcome the disappointment of dropping points at the Stadium of Light.
