Tony Yeboah said which of his iconic Leeds goals was better – his Liverpool or Wimbledon strike

Tony Yeboah was renowned for his incredible goals and for Leeds United fans, two are likely to stick in the memory more than the others during his time at Elland Road.

Joining Leeds in January 1995, Tony Yeboah only actually played for The Whites for two years before joining German side Hamburg in 1997 but Yeboah is a legend at Leeds for his incredible goals in 1995.

During his stint at Leeds, Yeboah amassed an incredible total of 32 goals in just 66 games in league and cup. The 59-time Ghana star though, is renowned for his iconic goals against Liverpool and Wimbledon.

Whether that is seen on Sky Sports’ Premier League Years, or whether it is posted on social media at the time of an anniversary, Leeds fans are often reminded of Yeboah’s powerful right-footed Leeds goals.

But four years ago, Yeboah actually said in an interview which of the two goals he felt was the better strike and his answer may surprise Leeds fans, who have not yet seen the interview back in 2020.

Yeboah thinks Leeds goal vs Wimbledon better than Liverpool

His goal against Wimbledon came in a 4-2 away win back in September 1995, when he latched on to a header. Yeboah chests the ball down, prods it forward with his knee, turns inside and leathers a shot.

The ball smashed into the underside of the crossbar, bouncing on the line and going in. A few weeks prior to that in August 1995, came his goal against Liverpool at Elland Road – a volley past David James.

Rod Wallace cushioned a header into Yeboah’s path but no one could have imagined what would come next, his shot crashing the bar and in. He told FourFourTwo in 2020 that his Wimbledon goal was best.

“To be honest, for technique and control, the goal against Wimbledon is better. But if you then add the ingredients of the crowd, the size of the match and all of the emotion, it’s the Liverpool one.”

Yeboah’s other three stunning goals for Leeds during goal glut

Only a few weeks after his goal against Wimbledon and still in September, Yeboah jinked and turned inside, going past a number of Sheffield Wednesday players before slamming a low show into the corner.

In December 1995, Yeboah would take on the entire Manchester United team during a 3-1 win at Elland Road before lifting the ball over an on-rushing Peter Schmeichel, as The Whites earned a memorable win.

One actually came with his left foot, and that was still just as powerful. A long ball over the top saw the ball bounce kindly for Yeboah and he smashed it home during a 2-1 win over West Ham in August 1995.
