£7.5m Leicester City star to sign out as Blackburn Rovers and Preston ready to finalize deal

Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End have set their sights on a possible loan deal for Leicester City striker Tom Cannon, as per reporter Alan Nixon.

Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End will both be playing Championship football next season, while Leicester City are headed back to the Premier League after wrapping up the second-tier title.

Lancashire rivals Rovers and Preston were battling at opposite ends of the Championship table. The former only survived on the final day thanks to a win over Leicester, while the latter saw a late play-off push collapse with five straight defeats.

Now, it is claimed the two clubs could be set to go to battle in the transfer market.

As per a Patreon report from journalist Alan Nixon, Leicester City striker Tom Cannon is a loan target for both Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End.

The Foxes are facing a decision over the former Everton talent’s immediate future following a tough first season at the King Power. After joining from the Toffees for a reported £7.5m, Cannon managed only two goals in 13 Championship appearances with injuries persisting and other striker options preferred over him.

Should the door open for him to head out on loan, Blackburn and Preston are queueing up as possible destinations for the Irishman.

History with Preston North End…

It was Cannon’s eye-catching form on loan at Preston North End that prompted Leicester City to snap the striker up last summer.

The 21-year-old notched eight goals in 21 games for the Lilywhites as he flourished in his first stint of regular senior football after tearing it up for Everton’s U18s and U21s.

Such form will have led to excitement over this season. However, as touched on before, injuries have limited his involvement and with veteran Jamie Vardy continuing to star, a starting spot has been hard to come by.

A key area for Blackburn Rovers

While Cannon has past with Preston, he might be an ideal signing for their rivals this summer.

Blackburn Rovers were heavily reliant on the goals of Championship top scorer Sammie Szmodics in their relegation fight and they can’t afford to put that expectation on him for a second season. Another talisman is needed, and Cannon could be just that.

The striker has shown what he can do in the second-tier with regular minutes. This season may have been a tougher one for him, but Cannon will be determined to get back to his best in the 2024/25 campaign, and a loan may help him do just that.

It rests on what Leicester City decide to do with him but the Aintree-born ace could prove a strong addition for either Blackburn Rovers or Preston North End this summer.
