Birmingham City to wait patiently for managerial dominoes to fall after third week Tony Mowbray’s successor search

Latest Birmingham City news from BirminghamLive includes the latest on the club’s hunt for a new manager

Birmingham City are having to wait patiently for the managerial dominoes to fall after their search for Tony Mowbray’s successor entered a third week.

Mowbray stepped down on May 21 and technical director Craig Gardner has been ringing around candidates to gauge their interest in the vacancy. Blues want to have a manager in place well before the start of pre-season – with players due to report around six weeks before the League One season begins on August 10.

BirminghamLive understands that Liam Rosenior was one of the managers Blues contacted at the beginning of their recruitment process. Rosenior, 39, is out of work after being sacked by Hull City despite guiding the Tigers to a seventh-placed finish in the Championship last term.

Rosenior informed Blues that he wanted to take time to consider his options and he is understood to have interest from clubs higher up the pyramid. While Blues is an attractive job, even in League One, there are currently two Championship jobs available at Burnley and Sunderland, and others could become available with Premier League sides looking to poach second tier bosses.

Blues are therefore having to play a waiting game for the more high profile names on their list. There are, however, a number of candidates who are more readily available to Blues.

Alex Neil – a three-time promotion winner in his managerial career – is keen on the top job at St Andrew’s. The Scot is looking to rebuild his reputation after a difficult spell at Stoke City and has also held talks with Blues.

Gary Rowett, who narrowly failed to save Blues from relegation at the end of last season, is also available but the club is expected to go down a different avenue.
