BREAKING NEWS: Steps taken as Jose Mourinho registers interest in Leicester City midfielder

Boubakary Soumare’s time at Leicester City may come to an end this summer amid interested from the Turkish giants

Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbache are said to be interested in Leicester City midfielder Boubakary Soumare according to reports from Turkey.

The 25-year-old arrived from French side Lille in 2021 but has never made the defensive midfield position his own – resulting in a loan move to La Liga outfit Sevilla last season. He returned to the fold in Leicester’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham earlier this week appearing as a late substitute for Facundo Buonanotte on 79 minutes.

However, his future may lie away from the King Power with Aslinda reporting the player to be on the Turkish giants’ radar after first-choice defensive midfielder Fred – formerly of Manchester United – sustained an injury during pre-season. The Turkish outlet says ‘concrete steps’ have been made but no official offer is thought to have been made currently.

Soumare is likely to fall further down the pecking order at the Foxes due to the arrival of Oliver Skipp – who completed a deal understood to be worth £20m plus £5m add-ons. Skipp has previously worked with City boss Steve Cooper so is more than likely going to slot straight into the squad at Soumare’s expense.

On the acquisition of Skipp, Cooper said: “It’s great to sign him. We want to honour what the boys did last year, it was amazing. But to honour it, we have to strengthen the team and squad.

“Oli offers us strength now, a different profile in midfield. This league is brutal. You have to be able to have a more competitive starting team and also when you make changes. That’s what the game is now, it’s about changes, it’s about five subs, and the impact those changes can have on a game.”

Cooper opted for a defensive midfield duo of Harry Winks and Wilfred Ndidi against Spurs – a partnership that served them well in the Championship-winning campaign last season. With Hamza Choudhury also in the ranks it is difficult to see when the French midfielder would feature – unless injuries take their toll over the course of the season.
