The number nine was being pursued by teams in Saudi Arabia, but Maresca wants him to stay at the King Power Stadium for a 12th season.
Jamie Vardy does not need to be convinced of his position in Enzo Maresca’s Leicester City revolution, according to the new manager, because the striker is certain about his future.
Vardy has a year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium, but interest from abroad has thrown doubt on his commitment. He has so far turned down a move to Saudi Arabia, where Khaleej FC is one of several clubs interested in signing him as a marquee signing as the Gulf state’s league attempts to recruit big names.
After a protracted goal drought, the number nine, long City’s talisman, saw his role wane in Brendan Rodgers’ last days, but he came back to the fore under Dean Smith. Maresca is eager to keep him and does not believe he needs to persuade Vardy to stay for a 12th season with the club.
“I’ve talked with Jamie a few times already,” Maresca stated this week. “We didn’t discuss it (the Saudi Arabia offer).” But for the time being, he is our player, and we are pleased if he will remain. This is the most I can say.
“To be honest, I’m not sure (he needs convincing).” I spoke with him a couple times, and he seemed at ease. He didn’t seem concerned about going, therefore I don’t think so.”
After five consecutive Premier League seasons of scoring at least 15 goals, Vardy only managed to find the net three times in the league last season, despite the fact that his demise was expected as he approached his 30s. Maresca, who turns 37 in January, is not going to dismiss him.
“He is an unbelievable player,” said the manager. “We’re hoping he can stay with us. This is the most crucial point. He’s a key figure. He will set a good example for the rest of the team, therefore we are delighted to have him.
