Enzo Maresca finally makes Harry Souttar point as defender plays first game

The Australian international centre-back played the full 90 minutes at Liverpool having not been included in a matchday squad since the opening weekend of the season

Enzo Maresca insists he will continue to consider Harry Souttar as a selection option after handing the centre-back his first appearance of the season.

Souttar, who nearly left for Rangers towards the end of the transfer window, played the full 90 minutes in Leicester City’s Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday. Not only was it his first competitive outing under Maresca, but it was the first time he had been included in a matchday squad since the opening weekend.

Wout Faes, Jannik Vestergaard, James Justin, and Conor Coady, who made his long-awaited City debut at Anfield, are all ahead of Souttar in the pecking order, but with Callum Doyle now out injured, there may be room for the Australian international. Maresca says he will be considered.

“I’m happy for Harry, happy for Conor, happy for Patson Daka, happy for all of them,” Maresca said after the trio all made their first appearances of the season. “But I’m happy for all of the players

“I’ve been here (Anfield) many times with many clubs. I was here last year. I know how difficult it is. How they work off the ball, they are unbelievable. We didn’t change, we came here and we tried to play.

“Yeah, (Harry) is our player. He is one of the players in the squad. For sure he could be an option.”

There is still no confirmation on the severity of Doyle’s knee injury, which is set to keep him on the sidelines for at least a few months. Asked again on Wednesday evening, Maresca said in 24 to 48 hours the club would have more details.
