Fans in shock as Conor Coady makes honest Everton transfer claim after 1-3 win

Conor Coady has made an interesting transfer claim about Everton, four months after leaving the club.

Speaking on the BBC’s The Monday Night Club podcast, the defender claimed that Everton need to stop searching for those few transfers that will transform them and instead change the culture within the club.

Coady arrived at Goodison Park on loan from Wolves last season and made a very positive impact as he helped the Toffees retain their Premier League status, making 24 appearances in the process.

The 30-year-old was initially expected to make his stay on Merseyside permanent, however Everton weren’t prepared to cough up the cash for his signature and he instead returned to Wolves. Coady has since joined Leicester City in the Championship.

The centre-back is still very fond of his former club and has admitted that Everton need to find leaders from their current crop rather than targeting transfers that never happen.

“I think over the last few years where Everton have been, everybody has been hoping for those couple of players. Everyone has been saying, we need this, or we need that,” Coady said.

“I actually think it has to be found from within. I will be completely honest. That’s what I really believe.

“I was part of a team at Wolves, and it’s a lot different I understand, but we changed from being a really poor Championship side to getting promoted out of the Championship and doing really well in the Premier League and we changed a lot – we brought a few players in – but there was a culture change from within.

“I think that can be done at Everton as well, I really do believe that. How it’s done, there are a lot more important and clever people than me, but we would all love to sit here now and say we have found this player, he is going to change everything, and I get that brings a new emphasis and dynamic at Goodison Park. But I get the feeling that people at Everton every transfer window, and we did it last year, we need this player, that player would be great, imagine if he comes in. It never happens.

“In January I don’t think we signed one player last season, it was just Ellis who came back on loan, so we were looking at it going ‘that would be great’ but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I’ll be completely honest. I think it’s finding it from within. Leaders within the team stepping up.”

Conor Coady is right about Everton’s more experienced players needing to step up and take responsibility, though the comparison between the Toffees and Wolves is rather out of touch.
