Leicester City escaped a points deduction for breaching the Premier League’s PSR regulations, which could see them changed
An urgent rewriting of Premier League and EFL rules is much more likely than a renewed bid by either competition to charge Leicester CIty over their 2022/23 accounts, a legal expert has said.
Last week an appeal board found an independent commission did not have jurisdiction to consider an alleged breach of Premier League profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) by Leicester, a decision which left the Premier League “surprised and disappointed”.
Leicester successfully argued they were no longer a Premier League member at the end of the accounting period – June 30, 2023. Their top-flight share had been handed to Luton earlier that month, so they were in effect an EFL club.
Leicester’s case will be a topic of discussion at an EFL board meeting on Thursday. One thing the EFL is likely to consider is whether, under its rules, it has jurisdiction to sanction Leicester instead, given the finding that they were in the Championship at the time the accounts were submitted.
