Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca was quoted by the Coventry Telegraph as suggesting Leeds United target Gus Hamer is the best player in the Championship, following Coventry manager Mark Robins’ praise for Kieran Dewsbury-Hall.
Hamer, 26, is a target for Leeds following his outstanding 2022-23 season, in which he assisted on 21 of his 45 goals for Mark Robins’ team, who reached the Championship play-off final. Hamer scored in both the semi-finals and the final.
The player has a contract until June 2024 and Phil Hay told the The Square Ball that Leeds are interested in him. A player that TeamTalk say would set interested sides back a fee of £16m. Forest and Burnley are also keen on Hamer.
Leicester returned to Championship life with a 2-1 comeback win over Coventry, as Dewsbury-Hall scored a late brace to secure three points. Robins praised Dewsbury-Hall, prompting Maresca to comment on Coventry’s Hamer.
“I think Hamer is probably one of the best in the Championship. I know him from before. I was working last year but when you enjoy football you watch all the competitions. He’s probably the best player in the Championship,” he said.

What a signing Hamer would be – for every single Championship club, and probably the bottom half of the Premier League. What is interesting will be to see which club actually pays Coventry’s asking price for the Brazil-born star.
Goals, assists, tenacity, technicality, passing, vision – he has a bit of everything. If Leeds can remain patient and make their move towards the end of the window, with Premier League clubs looking elsewhere, it would be superb.
But you would imagine that Hamer is likely to attract clubs from the Premier League. He is of top-tier quality and in terms of Premier League fees, he is hardly a huge expense. One to watch. Leeds have a chance, but it is a slim one.
