The transfer window may have closed for the summer, but Leicester City are still looking for ways to bolster their squad.
Leicester City’s Premier League campaign has gotten off to an underwhelming start, picking up one point from their first three games.
A draw on the opening day of the season against Tottenham Hotspur was followed up by defeats to Fulham and Aston Villa after a busy transfer window, in which the Foxes signed nine players.
Although the summer window is closed, there is still time to bring in free agents to the club and one former Premier League winner is being considered by Steve Cooper.
Premier League-winning free agent wanted by Leicester City in late transfer
Even though plenty of new faces have come through the door at the King Power Stadium, improvements could always be made.
One area that some Leicester fans believe improvement could be made in is the central defensive department and reports are suggesting that Joel Matip is a target.
The 33-year-old, who was key in Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League success, left Liverpool in the summer following the expiration of his contract and is available on a free.
According to Caught Offside, Matip is wanted by Leicester, as well as AFC Bournemouth, Fulham, and West Ham United, sparking a potential bidding war.
Joel Matip injury concerns could put Leicester City off sealing transfer
For all of his experience and quality, Matip’s injury record may mean Leicester look elsewhere if they choose to dip into the free agent market.
Matip missed the majority of last season after suffering an ACL injury and at 33, question marks about his fitness and recovery from such a lengthy spell on the sidelines could contribute to any final decision.
However, the former Cameroon international’s skillset, when fit, could be a huge bonus for the Foxes in their quest to avoid relegation.
So far, Leicester are yet to keep a clean sheet in a league game – something Matip could change.
