Leicester City injury latest as foxes drop list of nine key players out

Conor Coady is set to return to training next week, marking a significant step forward in his recuperation from a broken foot. This is good news for Enzo Maresca, who is missing nine internationals this week.

Conor Coady is on the verge of joining Leicester City’s training squad, which will consist of 17 players over the international break.

Coady has been out with a broken foot since July, but he expects to be ready for selection by the end of September, with the next stage being a return to training. He’ll be back on the field with his teammates next week.

Speaking last week, Maresca said on Coady: “He’s very close, probably after the international break he can finally join us in the sessions and day by day. He’s been huge to be honest. He’s been in almost every day with us and has been to every game home and away so he has shown exactly what he is in terms of leadership and team building. He’s always there. It’s fantastic.”

Coady is one of just three players currently out through injury, with Dennis Praet sidelined until the end of November with a serious back issue and Alex Smithies also unavailable. But there are plenty of other players away for the next week.

City have nine players on international duty for a series of European Championship qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and friendlies. They are Mads Hermansen (Denmark), Danny Ward (Wales), Wout Faes (Belgium), Harry Souttar (Australia), Callum Doyle (England Under-21s), Cesare Casadei (Italy Under-21s), Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho (both Nigeria), and Patson Daka (Zambia).

That leaves Maresca with a group of 15 fit outfield players to work with during the international break, albeit they won’t be getting down to business straight away. The manager is giving them some time off first.

He said after the 1-0 loss to Hull: “We have played seven games in a very short time, so now it’s important that we recover all of them, the energy, so we start again in the right way. We have some days off because they deserve it. Not because of the results, simply because they never stopped in the last period.”

The 17 players available to Maresca for the next week are Jakub Stolarczyk, Daniel Iversen, Jannik Vestergaard, James Justin, Ben Nelson, Ricardo Pereira, Hamza Choudhury, Harry Winks, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Albrighton, Yunus Akgun, Abdul Fatawu, Wanya Marcal, Stephy Mavididi, Kasey McAteer, Jamie Vardy, and Tom Cannon.
