Leicester City transfer embargo lifted’ in major boost for new manager

Leicester City are closing in on an appointment to replace Chelsea-bound Enzo Maresca and Graham Potter is bookies’ favourite

Leicester City’s transfer embargo has reportedly been lifted by the Premier League in what would be a huge boost for the club – and their prospective new manager.

Leicester were placed under a registration embargo by the EFL for allegedly breaching Profitability & Sustainability Rules (PSR). The club responded strongly to the Premier League and EFL, saying they have issued legal proceedings against both. The Foxes had also been charged with allegedly breaching PSR by the Premier League and referred to an independent commission

But the £10 million received in compensation from Chelsea for taking Enzo Maresca as manager “will be booked as pure profit for accounting purposes” and Leicester are now apparently confident they will not need to sell players to avoid potential breaches this month. The Sun claims the Maresca money is “the equivalent of selling a £50m player when it comes to FFP calculations”.

They were one of five clubs who were expected to need to get players out to raise urgent cash but that is now down to four, with Aston Villa, Everton, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest walking an FFP tightrope.

Leicester are in the process of hiring a replacement for Maresca and it is former Chelsea manager Graham Potter who is emerging as the odds-on bookies’ favourite. Potter, aged 49, has been waiting for the right job to come along since leaving Stamford Bridge in April 2023. He cut his managerial teeth at Ostersunds in Sweden and his reputation grew thanks to spells at Swansea and Brighton.

The Foxes are still waiting to find out if they will face a points deduction back in the top flight, which could have a big impact on their hopes for next term.
