Fabrizio Romano: Leicester open talks to hire manager Leeds really wanted before appointing Daniel Farke

Leicester City have opened talks with a manager that Leeds United really wanted to appoint ahead of hiring Daniel Farke last summer, as they search for a replacement for Enzo Maresca.

Leeds have since brought in Farke and he came within a whisker of securing promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt, a season which was largely successful as The Whites picked up 90 points.

Indeed, any normal season in which 90 points were obtained in the Championship would often mean promotion is secured. But in an unusual campaign, the top four all clocked up a huge 87 points or more.

Leicester were one of those four sides, winning the Championship under Enzo Maresca but before a ball has been kicked in the Premier League, the Foxes have lost their manager with Chelsea hiring the Italian.

He replaces Mauricio Pochettino in the hotseat and leaves Leicester managerless ahead of 2024-25. Now, Leicester have made a move to bring in a replacement according to an update from Fabrizio Romano.

Fabrizio Romano says Leicester in talks for manager Leeds wanted

Before the appointment of Farke at Elland Road, there were a number of candidates linked with the role. The likes of West Brom’s Carlos Corberan, Scott Parker, Brendan Rodgers and then of course, the German.

Another was Graham Potter, who has turned down a number of roles following his exit from Brighton. Phil Hay recently claimed that The 49ers wanted to hire Potter, who has been touted as the next England boss.

But now, Potter could be in line for a return to The Premier League with a move to Leicester to replace Maresca. That is according to Romano, who took to X to say that Leicester have opened talks with Potter.

“Leicester City have made contact with Graham Potter as serious candidate to replace Enzo Maresca. Talks ongoing to make decision on the favorite option but Potter’s appreciated, waiting for club to decide.”

Potter would have been a brilliant appointment at Elland Road

But there is no chance that he would have even contemplated taking over at Leeds from Sam Allardyce, with The Whites relegated to The Championship. Potter fancies himself as a Premier League manager.

Rightly so, a boss that worked wonders at Brighton and had his hands tied at Stamford Bridge. He is more than deserving of the links with England, Manchester United and even recently, Dutch giants Ajax.

If Leicester can bring in Potter out from the cold then it would be a wonderful appointment. The issue Leicester have is whether they start with a points deduction, which is likely to put off any new managers.
