Premier League legend sends strong advice to Dean Smith over Jamie Vardy’s playing time

The striker snapped his six-month league goal drought in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United, according to the latest Leicester City news.

Former Premier League goalkeeper David James has urged Dean Smith to continue playing Jamie Vardy after the striker ended his goal drought.

On Tuesday night, the 36-year-old scored his first goal in six months in a 1-1 tie with Leeds United. This was only his second Premier League goal of the season, and his fifth overall.

Vardy was frequently used as a substitute under previous boss Brendan Rodgers this season, as he failed to regain the form that made him one of the Premier League’s most feared strikers. However, he has started two of Smith’s three games.

He was named to the Elland Road bench for the match, but his introduction with 20 minutes remaining had an impact on the outcome. After equalizing in the 80th minute, he thought he had put City ahead just a few minutes later, but the assistant referee’s flag cut short the celebrations.

Speaking about Vardy’s performance after entering the game, James speculated that it may lead to Smith giving him more starts, especially given the uncertainty surrounding Kelechi Iheanacho’s injured situation.

“A lot of times Jamie Vardy has been coming on as a sub, or if he has started, he has come off very early, so it’s not like he has been playing full games to try and get those goals up,” the former shot-stopper told Sky Sports’ Football Show.

“With the way he played yesterday, coming on, making an impact, and having a goal disallowed, you’d think Dean Smith would want to start him in the next game.” It often helps if you can get your goalscorer to score goals.”
