Tom Cannon’s goals tally at Stoke is not going unnoticed, and neither are his celebrations.
The Leicester City forward, on loan with the Potters, netted his third goal in three games on Wednesday night, confidently striking a penalty into the bottom corner in a 2-0 win over Blackburn. To celebrate, he cupped his ears and then bowed to the Rovers supporters at Ewood Park, with several City fans pointing that a tendency to wind up opposition fans may have been influenced by Jamie Vardy’s antics over the years.
But he only gets to celebrate if he scores and the 21-year-old is now up to seven goals in his last eight games in all competitions for Stoke. Three of those have come from the penalty spot, but each have been well-taken, while he won the spot-kick himself against Derby at the weekend.
After one win in eight in the Championship, Stoke have now claimed victories in back-to-back matches under new manager Narcis Pelach. The hope will be that an upturn in form leads to more chances for Cannon. Pelach feels the striker is “more competitive” than when he first took the job too.
Speaking after the win over Derby at the weekend, Pelach said: “I’m really pleased not just for his goal, he can press, he can defend, he stays more competitive than one month ago. He has to keep going because he has a bright future.”
Cannon’s six Championship goals place him third in the league’s scoring charts, behind only Norwich’s Borja Sainz and West Brom’s Josh Maja. It’s also earned him a recall to the Republic of Ireland for their games against Finland and England next week, Cannon joining City winger Kasey McAteer in the group.
