There was some discussion about Liverpool player Curtis Jones’ second goal against Leicester.
Some Premier League fans were perplexed on Monday night as Liverpool’s second goal against Leicester was allowed despite Curtis Jones seeming to be offside on the VAR replay. In the first half, Jones smashed a dipping half-volley past Daniel Iversen to put Liverpool up 2-0, but several spectators felt the goal should have been called out for offside.
And that was due to a VAR error. When the officials first checked to see if Jones was offside, they paused the game and drew the lines that showed the Liverpool midfielder was definitely beyond the last defender.
However, the VAR Chris Kavanagh instantly realized he had drawn the lines at the incorrect time. He’d done it when Cody Gakpo passed the ball to Mohamed Salah, rather than when Salah passed it to Jones.
Sky Sports did not display it at the time, instead switching to a camera shot of referee Craig Pawson. When the lines were drawn correctly, it was revealed that Jonny Evans’ heel played Jones very narrowly onside.
That meant Liverpool immediately extended their lead at the King Power Stadium, yet it did not stop the debate on social media, with many incorrectly insisting the goal should not have stood. The host team, who is facing relegation to the Championship, were defeated.
After that, Trent Alexander-Arnold scored a magnificent free-kick to make it seven wins in a row for Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League-chasing team. After the game, Alexander-Arnold heaped accolades on fellow Scouser Jones.
“It’s not just tonight [that he’s stepped up], I think [it’s] since he came back into the team,” the right-back told Sky Sports. He’s a young man who would have preferred to play more throughout the season.
“But he has stepped up when given the opportunity, and I believe that is all you can do.” He has demonstrated his ability both on and off the field. And he has unquestionably amazed everyone.
“He has set standards for himself, and we need to maintain that as a team and as individuals; he now has a level that he needs to hit every game.” Today was an amazing night for him, and he contributed to the team’s victory.”
