BREAKING NEWS: Salford City Join Fierce Battle To Land 23-Year-Old Midfielde

Salford City have joined several sides including SPFL giants Motherwell in the race to land Halifax Town midfielder Kane Thompson-Sommers this summer, according to a report via Football Insider.

The 23-year-old is currently under contract at the National League side, but following their heavy play-off quarter-final defeat against Solihull Moors, could Thompson-Sommers be set to switch clubs before the new season kicks off?

How did Thompson-Sommers fair last season?

Thompson-Sommers joined Halifax from National League North side Hereford last summer and quickly established himself within the midfield under Chris Millington, helping the club to reach the play-off places via a final day victory.

In total, the midfielder made 30 league appearances last season as well as one additional game in the play-offs. During that time, Thompson-Sommers scored once during a 2-0 victory against Gateshead and provided an assist during a 2-1 win against Altrincham on Boxing Day.

Over the course of the campaign, Thompson-Sommers managed a passing completion rate of 82% as well as averaging 4.3 interceptions and 9.1 duel wins per 90 minutes in the National League.

Which clubs are interested in signing him?

According to Football Insider, Halifax Town face competition from three sides this summer. League Two Salford City have lost midfielder Elliot Watt (who’s since joined Burton) and are likely to be searching for his replacement.

Meanwhile, fellow National League side Sutton United are also reportedly interested in signing him, with the duo also facing competition from SPFL giants Motherwell.

Would Salford be an ideal move for the midfielder?

Salford City suffered a frustrating 2023/24 campaign in League Two, finishing the season in 20th place, just nine points above the relegation zone whilst being 19 points off the play-off places.

Thompson-Sommers was born in London but has spent the majority of his career with League One side Birmingham City in the youth teams. A move to Salford is his current location, whilst Sutton would allow him to return closer to his birth place.

However, the advantage Salford City have is that they can offer the midfielder League Two football, with the likelihood of increased game time as a result of Watt’s departure.r
