Luton Town – Can We Blame Chelsea Is The Big Question

Saturday 11-May-2024 will not go down in the history books as the day we were relegated but it would take on almighty miracle for the Hatters to stay up now.

The 3-1 defeat, away to West Ham United, meant that catching Nottingham Forest, even if they were, hours later, beaten by a resurgent Chelsea would be nigh on impossible.

Come next weekend, the final weekend of the season, if Luton Town beat Fulham and Nottingham Forest lose at Burnley, survival and retaining our current Premier League status would, courtesy of our current goal difference, need us to engineer a 12-goal swing, something that, not even in our wildest dreams, is not going to happen.

Yesterday, at the London Stadium, the dream of staying up was alive for in excess of fifty minutes with the Hatters having taken an early lead, with Albert Sambi Lokonga scoring his first Premier League goal for Luton Town.

But even though the Hatters were leading, West Ham United cranked up the pressure, especially in the second half, to run out comfortable 3-1 winners.

Now, next season, we will be back in the EFL playing Championship football with our tenure as a top-flight status club having lasted just one season.

Of course, we are all disappointed, but we should never forget what this club has achieved, on a tight budget, and how we gave it our all in the best league in the world and made several pundits eat their words.

Ahead of the game I was confident Chelsea would beat Nottingham Forest, as they did, but I did not take into the equation that following their 5-0 thrashing, in their previous game, the Hammers would come out determined to put on a great display to celebrate David Moyes last home game in charge of the club.

Therefore, like the article headline says, for the next couple of days, I’m blaming Chelsea for our Premier League demise!

Luton Town v Fulham?
