Maxime Lopez , former Olympique de Marseille midfielder , recently signed with Paris FC. Invited to the show “After Foot” on RMC this Thursday evening, Lopez shared his thoughts on his transfer and his discussions with Roberto De Zerbi , his former coach at Sassuolo.
Maxime Lopez surprised many observers by joining Paris FC this summer. After a difficult season and a complicated transfer window, Lopez chose to commit to the Ligue 2 club, despite late offers from Ligue 1 clubs. “It was a surprising choice because last year I made a Conference League final with Fiorentina and two and a half months later I signed for Paris FC,” he explained.
Maxime Lopez then revealed that he had discussions with Roberto De Zerbi this summer. “To be honest, we talked a little. He had priorities that he made. I think we had to trim down before doing something,” he confided. Lopez expressed his admiration for De Zerbi , both on a human and sporting level, and mentioned that he would have liked to work with him again at OM.
“He is a coach that I appreciate enormously, both humanly and sportingly. I almost joined him at Shakhtar six months after his arrival (in 2021), for his style of play. For him, I would have gone there. Then, there was the war. At Brighton, he also contacted me. We spoke this summer. I sent him a message to congratulate him. I knew that he liked Marseille and its atmosphere. He really wanted to one day coach a club of this caliber, with this pressure. Would I have gone there (to OM)? Yes, I would have gone there,” he indicated.
