Cooper Flagg Helps Duke Make History In First NCAA Tournament Game
The Duke Blue Devils suffered a major scare in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals when freshman sensation Cooper Flagg went down with an ankle injury. With Flagg out for the remainder of the conference tournament, Duke still cruised to a title.
Flagg’s status was questionable going into the first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. But, he was able to give it a go on Friday as No. 1 seed Duke dominated No. 16 seed Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers 93-49 in the first round.
The Blue Devils’ 44-point win is by far the biggest win of the tournament at the time of this article. However, with the help of Flagg in his NCAA Tournament debut, Duke was able to walk away with the win and a new record.
The 44-point win by Duke marks the seventh NCAA Tournament win by 40+ points in program history, the most by any college basketball team in history.
The last time Duke was able to pull off a 40-point win was in 2011 when they defeated No. 16 seed Hampton Pirates 87-45 in the first round. Mike Krzyzewski was coaching the team, and Kyrie Irving was the point guard.
ACC Network announced Duke’s historic feat on X.
“Duke’s seventh NCAA tournament win by 40+ points. The most of any school.”
