Newcastle United suffers a major blow as their £20 million star and four key players are ruled out of the Liverpool match.
Joe Willock will miss Newcastle United’s match against Liverpool today (17.30 GMT).
The Reds travel to St James’ Park looking for their third consecutive Premier League victory. Jurgen Klopp’s team is nine points behind fourth-placed Newcastle, but a win would put them in contention for a place in the Champions League.
Liverpool appears to be relatively injury-free, with Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino coming off the bench in the 2-0 Merseyside derby win over Everton. Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk returned to full training this week after sitting out against Everton. Thiago Alcantara (hip) and Ibrahima Konate (hamstring) are both expected to miss out.
Willock will not play for Newcastle. The midfielder suffered a hamstring injury in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth last weekend. Willock will not be risked as Newcastle prepares for the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley next weekend.
“I think he will be doubtful tomorrow,” manager Eddie Howe said. He complained about his hamstring, so I don’t think it’s a serious injury. There is a strong possibility of playing (at Wembley).”
After being substituted against Bournemouth, Miguel Almiron (hand) and Allan Saint-Maximin (knock) are both expected to be available.
Callum Willson was ruled out of the stalemate against his former club due to a minor injury. The striker was scheduled to train for the first time yesterday and could return today. “Callum has done well,” Howe said. We said at the time that it was a minor complaint for him because he hadn’t trained yet. “We’re hoping he trains today.”
Left-back Matt Targett has returned to training but will not be pushed into action.
Bruno Guimaraes is suspended, and former Liverpool defenders Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth are also out.
Captain Jamaal Lascelles is expected to return after missing the game against Bournemouth due to personal reasons.
