Despite Liverpool’s recent victory Newcastle United’s Champions League spot can be booked early

Newcastle United must focus on overcoming Brighton, with Unai Emery and Aston Villa holding the key to a quick return to the Champions League on Tyneside.

After losing to Liverpool tonight, Leicester City were unable to make Newcastle United’s path to the Champions League any easier.

The emphatic away win for Jurgen Klopp’s side made it seven consecutive victories for the Reds, and while their victory leaves them just one point behind Manchester United and Newcastle, the Magpies and Red Devils still have what might be a key game in hand over the Reds.

Newcastle United must concentrate on beating Brighton, while Unai Emery and Aston Villa hold the key to a rapid return to the Champions League. A win over Brighton & Hove Albion will restore the four-point margin between Newcastle and Liverpool. Eddie Howe’s side can still reach 75 points if they win all of their games, while the Reds can only reach 71 if they beat Aston Villa and Southampton.

Newcastle will be in the Champions League next season if they beat Brighton and then lose to Leicester on Monday. And if Newcastle beats Brighton and Liverpool loses to Aston Villa on Saturday, it’s a done deal for Newcastle, with neither the Reds nor the South Coast team able to stop them.

The Reds took the lead after Wout Faes mishandled a long pass, which Jordan Henderson picked out for Mo Salah, who crossed for Curtis Jones to finish on 33 minutes. Jones got his second three minutes later as Salah played him in again before finding the net.

Trent Alexander-Arnold extended Liverpool’s advantage after the break with a free kick, making it 3-0.
