Eddie Howe ask Newcastle United to keep tabs on Chelsea midfielder prospect

Newcastle United eyeing up a summer move for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is interested in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, according to The Athletic

Gallagher had an excellent loan spell at Crystal Palace last season, scoring eight goals and assisting three more in 34 league games. When he returned to Chelsea this time, things were not the same for him.

The England international was one of three players wanted by Newcastle in the January transfer window, but nothing came of it. Palace wanted him back on loan on the final day of the winter window, but that did not work out.

Gallagher has played just over 1,200 minutes for Chelsea in all competitions so far, with 19 of his 31 appearances coming off the bench.

Chelsea have a bloated squad after signing eight new players in the January window, with good players not getting enough game time. We saw how difficult it was for Graham Potter to select his Champions League squad for the knockout stages. He didn’t have room for Benoit Badiashile or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Daily Mail reported a few days ago that the club could offload up to eleven players in the summer to recoup some money and trim the squad. Gallagher was mentioned as a possible exit.

The 23-year-old is a good player, but things have not worked out for him here. If Newcastle make the move in the summer, it won’t be a bad idea to sell him and use the money to strengthen the squad in other positions, or as the manager wants.
