Eddie Howe immediately ordered Newcastle board to replace defender who lost ten individual duels

Eddie Howe was badly let down by Dan Burn.

Eddie Howe’s men rarely threatened David De Gea in Manchester United’s goal and failed to create any clear-cut chances to get back into the game.

On what was ultimately a disappointing day for Newcastle, one player who let the manager down badly was left-back Dan Burn, who struggled throughout the game.

On both sides of the ball, the former Brighton man was underwhelming and did not do enough to help the Magpies claw their way back into the game.

Out of possession, the 6 foot 6 Englishman lost ten of his 13 individual duels – including two of his three in the air – and was dribbled past four times, according to Sofascore, while only making two tackles and two clearances.

These statistics show that Manchester United’s forward players dominated the defender on the ground and in the air, with Antony in particular giving him the runaround.

On the ball, Burn’s performance was also lacking. According to Sofascore, the 30-year-old failed both of his dribble attempts and did not create a single chance for his teammates.

He didn’t provide any attacking threat down the left flank for Newcastle to support Allan Saint-Maximin, which made his poor defending all the more disappointing, as it meant he was a liability for the club at both ends of the field.

It was a huge shame for the local lad, and an experience he deserved after playing five times in the competition leading up to the final, but the dud was unable to make the step up to playing in such a massive match.

The £35k-per-week defender was worse than the own goal’s scorer, Botman, who also won five of his six aerial battles and completed ten of his 15 long pass attempts, earning a Sofascore rating of 6.6.

Burn, on the other hand, received a dismal rating of 5.7 for his performance, and his dismal statistics, both in and out of possession, back it up, implying that the ex-Lille man was the better of the two defenders, despite putting the ball into his own net.
