Eddie Howe includes Manchester United midfielder on Newcastle’s January transfer list

Newcastle United could try to sign Manchester United’s Scott McTominay and launch a triple raid on Chelsea during the January transfer window, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

In addition to the Scotland midfielder, the Magpies are interested in Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech as well as England midfielders Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

McTominay, a United academy product, has seen his playing time at Old Trafford reduced this season due to Erik ten Hag’s signings of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. McTominay, a midfield regular under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick last season, has only made 13 league games this season.

Edwards says that Eddie Howe and the rest of Newcastle’s management team have long admired the player, and McTominay is open to a move, but no formal contact has yet been made. United may be hesitant to do business with a contender for a top-four spot.

Doing business with Chelsea may not be easy. With a rising injury crisis at Stamford Bridge, Edwards believes the Blues would be unlikely to trade Gallagher or Loftus-Cheek, but with the acquisition of Ukraine international Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in an £89 million transfer last week, they may be open to listening on Ziyech.

Ziyech, 29, is in his third season with Chelsea after joining from Ajax. This season, he has seen minimal action, making only nine league appearances.

The Magpies are presently third in the rankings with 48 points, nine points behind leaders Arsenal. On Saturday, the Toon travel to South London to face 12th-place Crystal Palace.
