Newcastle United are reportedly ready to rekindle their interest in Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu when the season comes to an end.
The 29-year-old made a controversial move across Milan in the summer of 2021, joining Inter on a free transfer from AC Milan. He made an immediate impact with the Nerazzurri, scoring and assisting in a 4-0 home win over Genoa on his debut, and he finished the season with eight goals and 13 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions. Calhanoglu also played a key role in securing silverware, scoring in a 4-2 win over Juventus in the Coppa Italia Final.
He has continued to impress this season, contributing nine goals in 32 appearances, but his future has been questioned after he was linked with a move to the Premier League during the January transfer window.
However, he remained at the San Siro amid reports that Inter was willing to extend his current contract, which is set to expire at the end of the season. Calhanoglu expressed his delight at the prospect of extending his stay at Inter, as well as his delight at the reaction he has received from key figures at the club.
“I’m proud that Inter want to extend my contract, and my intention is to stay here,” he said recently. But I intend to stay in Milan after that and continue working in football.
“Perhaps I’ll open a 100% Turkish restaurant, which is sadly lacking in this city. I could tell there was something special about this place from the first day I arrived. I must express my gratitude to my teammates, the coaching staff, and everyone who works here. I was immediately made to feel welcome.
“The fans’ positivity gave me energy, motivation, and self-confidence; I feel free here because I know they support me even when I make mistakes.”
As things stand, no extension has been agreed upon, and Inter Live has reported that Newcastle and Leeds United are ready to make a bid of around £25 million to entice Inter to part ways with the Turkish international at the end of the season.
