Eddie Howe reveals why Newcastle United’s best striker will miss trip to Dubai

The striker was injured during his last international trip.

Newcastle United will travel to Dubai without striker Alexander Isak, who has been named to Sweden’s squad for Euro qualifiers against Belgium and Azerbaijan.

Isak’s injury woes began last autumn, when he suffered a thigh injury while on international duty with Sweden. It meant he missed the rest of the first half of the season and wasn’t seen again until the FA Cup defeat at Sheff Wed in January.

Sweden coach Janne Andersson has named him to his squad for two Euro 2024 qualifiers at home. Following the weekend’s victory over Wolves, Isak stated: “I’m not considering anything. I feel good, and my body is in good shape, so I’m just looking forward.”

Eddie Howe admitted last week that his squad for the trip to Dubai will be depleted. Jamal Lewis is off to Northern Ireland on international duty, and Slovakia has called up Martin Dubravka.

On Thursday, Newcastle’s England contingent will learn whether they have made the squad for Euro qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.
